HI All.

I've just treated my self to what I think is a really nice DSLR,

Its done pretty much everything I've asked of it, deliberately and otherwise
:)

I until today, hadn't explored the software CD, but today installed it all
and then armed with my trust USB cable connected up the camera and initially
the computer said that new hardware detected etc, even reported it was a
Canon camera initially.

The EOS utility will not connect to the camera, and in device manager it
says under Imaging devices 'Digital Still Camera' and has a little yellow
triangle over it.

in the properties of this device it says ;

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous
instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

No amount of reboots or uninstall / reinstall etc, is getting this device
recognised properly by the computer.

Any ideas ??

Thanks in advance.

Before anyone can help on this what OS are you using?

Personally I never connect my camera to the PC, I always use a card
reader. But as a 40D user and interested in this issue, I loaded the
s/w on to my PC (Vista Home Premium) and connected the camera, no
issue. On looking at the Canon website I found the CD was out of date
so I upgraded all of the s/w, again no issue.

Sorry I can't help much more without further info.

You're missing out on a lot - the EOS utility is great for time-lapse,
tethered shooting and delicate macro work (you can focus without
touching the camera - invaluable when your DOF is 1mm).

Simon: Try on a different PC, if it still doesn't work then you may have
a problem with your camera. You may need to go to Canon to get it
sorted, but they should be helpful even if the camera is outside of
warranty.

Sorry Simon but I have had my 40D over 12 months and never managed to
install this software correctly. ~~~I too tried everything - without
success.
